Marijuana Smoking Reduces Sperm Count

Men who regularly smoke marijuana produce low ejaculate volume. They also have reduced fertility levels. This is due to the fact that marijuana reduces their sperm count, as well as an increased number of abnormal sperm.

Marijuana has many benefits to humans and pets. The herb helps manage the symptoms of cancer, increase appetite and reduce anxiety. CBD oil for dogs is obtained from hemp and cannabis plants. The cannabidiol helps dogs with cancer, seizures, pain and Cushing’s syndrome.

But too much cannabis is not good for male sexual health. These are the results of a reproductive study on marijuana smoking done by the University at Buffalo.

The study also looked at the behavior of sperm from men who frequently smoke marijuana. They found that these sperm swim too fast and too early, both of which negatively affect male fertility.

Frequent Marijuana Smoking Reduces Sperm Count and Ejaculate Volume

The result?

A drastic reduction in male fertility.

Marijuana smoking reduces sperm count and ejaculate volume

This was the first study ever carried out to “assess marijuana’s effects on specific swimming behavior of sperm from marijuana smokers and to compare the results with sperm from men with confirmed fertility”.

Human sperm has receptors for the active compounds found in marijuana smoke. These compounds are called cannabinoids. They inhibit the release of enzymes from sperm – enzymes which enable penetration of the egg by the sperm. They also change the sperm’s swimming pattern. Furthermore, the compounds in weed reduces the ability of the sperm to bind to the ovum. All these effects reduce male fertility.

The results of this study are similar to another study by The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) on the relationship between marijuana and human reproduction.

Effects of Long-term Marijuana Smoking on Sperm Count

The NCBI study found that long-term smoking of marijuana causes physiological changes that alter a man’s reproductive ability. The study noted that “declines in sperm volume and count and abnormal sperm motility have been observed in chronic marijuana users. In vitro studies show that THC produces a marked degeneration of human sperm.” THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychoactive compound in marijuana smoke. The amount of weed an individual smokes is also important since the compounds in marijuana are absorbed quickly but are eliminated very slowly.

It should be noted that smoking weed also affects reproduction in females. This is because “high rates of anovulation and luteal insufficiency have been observed in women smoking marijuana at least 3 times weekly”. Anovulation is caused by the ovaries failing to release an oocyte during a woman’s menstrual cycle. It leads to a lack of ovulation.

As a result, men who wish to increase chances of conception – as well as increase ejaculate volume should avoid marijuana smoke. Just as with cigarette smoking, people should also avoid inhaling secondhand marijuana smoke!
